Hi, I’m Derrick Kwa. I was born on December 16, 1990 in the small City/State/Country of Singapore. For more general information about me, click here.
I’ve been a math geek for as long as I can remember. And towards the end of 2008, I started getting really into poker. I started off by studying the Harrington on Hold’Em series, and Negreanu’s Power Hold’em Strategy.
The big moment for me came only around Fall 2009, however, when I got my hands on the book The Mathematics Of Poker. Reading it really just combined both those passions for me. Around this time, I lost a hand that really stuck with me (I spent a lot of time wondering whether or not I misplayed it), and I decided I’d try and use the techniques from the book to analyze the hand – to quantitatively see whether I misplayed the hand, instead of just speculating about strategy. I’ll probably write about that hand eventually, so stay tuned.
Anyway, from there, it was just a small leap to deciding I’d do that sort of analysis regularly, and another small leap to deciding to blog about it. I figured I’d gain more from writing about it, because I’d get to see your thoughts on my analysis as well, and learn from that.
So that’s how this blog came about. And I can’t wait to see where it’ll lead.
